Robots Want to Help at Home
Many robots can already run, dance, or do fun tricks on a stage. But can they help in a messy home? That is the new question some Chinese robot companies are trying to answer.
At a recent event in Beijing, a robot picked up litter and arranged flowers in a vase. The show was not as flashy as robots doing flips or races, but it had a different goal. It tried to show how robots might help with real jobs inside homes one day.
One company, X Square Robot, says housework is much harder for robots than running. A robot can learn simple repeated actions more easily. But a real home is full of small surprises. Slippers may be in the wrong place. Toys may be on the floor. Light changes, and objects are not always in the same spot. Even a tiny mistake can make a task fail.
The company says it trained its new AI model with data from more than 100 households. It also started a service in Shenzhen where people can book a human cleaner and a cleaning robot together. The robot is still slow and sometimes clumsy, but the company believes real homes are the best classroom.
